Power Supply Unit (PSU)

Hi everyone!

Today is my day off from work so I woke up rather late. Hopefully today I will be able to post both about the PSU and the Computer Case.

Buying a PSU is something you may want to spend a little time thinking about. There are a couple of things you have to mindful about which I shall list here.

A) Always keep in mind how much power you actually need in the system. The obvious question that arises is how do you know? There are several tools on the internet which can help you calculate the power requirements of your build.

2. Thermaltake
3. Extreme Outervision

You can go to any of these links and start entering all the information it requires. Now here is a pro tip. After you see your recommended wattage, sit and think how much future upgrades you want to do. Now I, for example have one video card in my system at the moment but I intend on getting maybe more or maybe a newer more powerful one which may require more power. So let's say your recommended wattage come up as 450W. You can search for a 450W psu and you can get them pretty cheaply too, but if you do upgrades in the future, you will have to buy another psu because now suddenly your computer cannot provide enough power to all of your components. I would suggest going at least 100-150 Watts above your recommended wattage.

Of course you could go all out and buy a 1200 Watt PSU and not have to care about it all, but I would not recommend you do so. Firstly because you will not be using a huge portion of the power it can supply and basically will be under utilizing your psu. Secondly they cost more and if something goes wrong and your warranty does not cover it, you will just have lost quite a bit of money. I personally tend to look more for efficient usage and will try to buy things keeping that in mind. Of course if you want to by all means do it but I was just stating my personal opinion.

B) Noise. Noise is something you may not think off when building your pc but you will notice it when you are using your system regularly. It can become a bit annoying if you keep hearing a constant buzz in the background  . I would suggest reading a few reviews about the component and see if some people mention noise. I would also caution against over analyzing comments because the more you read, the more likely you are to run in to problems people ran in to because generally people resort to reviewing things only when something goes wrong. Take everything with a grain of salt.

C) Power Cables. What do I mean by power cables? When you buy PSUs, you will notice they come with a huge number of cables which you use to connect various things inside you computer. Make sure you have enough cables to power everything and also some extra cables left so you can expand in the future should you want to. Always make sure the PSU has cables for the video card because newer video cards all require their own direct connection to the PSU.

D) Clutter. Buy a PSU with a million cables and after you set up everything, you may notice that the inside looks cluttered with wires. Wire clutter can also impede air flow which in turn will raise the internal temperature and looks plain messy. I just love it when I open my case for cleaning and everything looks neat and organized. To solve that problem, manufactures also sell Modular Power Supplies which have the option of disconnecting power cables which you are not using thereby reducing clutter.

E) 80 PLUS Rating. What is 80+ ? 80+ is an initiative to promote and increase energy efficiency in PSUs. It certifies that products have at least 80% efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rater load and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load. For you it will mean lower electricity bills,less waste of electric energy and less heat generation. There are several levels of this certification which are as follows

Corsair has several award winning PSUs and I greatly admire this company and the hard work it puts in to create quality products. They have 5 series of Power Supplies which you can choose from

 Builder series for basic system builds. Carries 80+ Certification and comes in 430 Watts, 500 Watts and 600 Watts.








2. GS Series


Balanced between Price and Performance. Carries 80+ and 80+ Bronze Certifications and comes in 500W, 600W, 700W and 800W.







3. TX Series


Hardcore PC Gaming, Performance Enthusiast Level and affordable. Carries 80+ Bronze Certification throughout the series. Comes in 550W, 650W, 750W, 850W and 950W and has both Modular and Non Modular options.

They make amazing Computer Cases and they also make amazing Power Supplies. They have a very big line of PSUs to choose from so I will be listing a few of them but you can go to their website and check them out. They also have a few 80+ Platinum PSUs in the mix. A small note. Read descriptions very carefully as they have a few power supply series that are exclusively compatible with Antec cases so they might not fit readily in your build.

1. VP Series


The entry level series from Antec with very good stability and a few of the models carry 80+ certifications as well. Good for budget builds. Comes in 350W, 430W, 450W, 500W and 550W.








2. Neo Eco



Economical, High Efficiency Power Supplies. The Neo Eco series has 80+ Certification throughout the series with Active Power Factor Correction (automatically switches to your voltage type, Universal Input) and quiet, solid operation. Available in 400W, 450W, 520W and 620W. Does not come with a power cable so you have to use your old one.





3. EarthWatts Series


Antec's environmentally friendly PSU series. 80+, 80+ Bronze and a few are 80+  Platinum Certified! Some of their PSUs are also SLI and CrossFireX Certified. Comes in 380W, 430W, 450W, 500W, 550W, 650W AND 750W. You can use them to power some good gaming rigs.






4. High Current Gamer


Antec's Gaming lineup features 80+ Bronze Certification throughout the line, special High Current connectors and heavy duty cabling all designed to give you high efficiency, excellent cooling and loads of power. Some also feature SLI and CrossFire certifications. Modular options also available. Comes in 400W, 520W, 620W, 750W and 900W.





5.  High Current Pro


Antec's top of the line series boasting 80+ Gold PSUs and one Platinum Certified PSU. Supporting Modular Cable Management, the HCP comes in 750W, 850W, 1000W and 1200W. A very solid choice to consider.







COOLER MASTER (www.coolermaster.com/)

Makers of some of the best Computer Cases, Cooler Master also makes some good Power Supplies. Chief amongst them is the Silent Pro Gold  Lineup


Featuring an 80+ Gold Rating, The Silen Pro Gold is a very good lineup of PSUs that you can consider from. Comes in 800W, 1000W and 1200W. Good noise reduction capability as well.







Make sure that your motherboard also supports the PSU by looking up the PSU Type. For example my Cosshair V mother board requires for a fully configured system to use a PSU that complies with ATX 12V Specification 2.0 (or later version.) Make sure it has a decent number of SATA power connectors (to connect your hard drives now or in the future,) and PCI-E Connectors (to power up your video card.) Check dimensions to make sure it will fit in your system. Generally PSUs are of a similar shape but just pay attention when you are buying so you can avoid having to send it back in because it could not fit in to whatever Case you ended up buying.

You can check out Newegg and browse through their huge collection to see which one you like but for my money, you can't go wrong with Corsair or Antec PSUs. In the end the PSU I chose was

My recommended power came up as ~430W. With that in mind and my future build ideas I selected 750W as my PSU power and I went for this PSU out of all the others chiefly for price. It is retailing right now  $104.99 but I bought it for $80 at a ridiculous sale I found one day.

RAM Selection

Hi everyone!
I am back with part 6 of the computer voyage we are on. Today we will be talking about RAMs. A good high performance Ram is one of the fundamental blocks of an awesome system for gaming or any other purpose. Bigger the Ram and/or faster the Ram, the more of your data is moved around and the more smoother everything feels. There are a ton of good companies out there making quality rams and it is possible to find some very good deals. So onwards with the reviews.

You will notice when you look up descriptions of RAMS that some are Dual Channel while others are Tri Channel, Quad Channel or even Hex Channel. So what is meant by Dual Channel RAM? Or Tri Channel, Quad Channel or Hex Channel? First let's take a short class on this subject. As Computer Programs got more and more complex, they needed better and faster Hardware capable of transporting data at a much faster rate while also being stable enough to last a while. With that thought, the Multi-channel Memory Architecture was developed. It increases the transfer speed of data between the DRAM (or Dynamic RAM) and the memory controller by adding more paths or "channels" between them. That means that in theory, a Dual Channel RAM doubles the data transfer rate. So to achieve the Dual Channel effect (for lack of a better word,) you will need to populate two of the same colored slots on your motherboard with two RAMs.
Getting all identical memory chips will help you get a very stable performance but depending on your board, you could populate two with one kind and the other two slots with a different set of memory but they will operate on the same speed as the slowest RAMs you have so it would make more sense to make sure you are using the same RAM in all the slots.

Some of my favorite companies are Corsair, Patriot, Kingston, G.Skill and Mushkin.

When it comes to gaming memory, The Vengeance line from Corsair is one of the best. Sporting a wicked looking heat sink and very stable performance, The Vengeance series is a favorite among gaming and enthusiast users alike. They come in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacity. So your Dual Channel configuration could be a 2x2GB (Total 4GB), 2x4GB (8GB) or 2x8GB (16GB.) if you are populating just two RAM slots out of the 4 available to you.  The Speeds available (from my knowledge of course and if there are more, I would apologize for not listing them) are 1600,1866,2000 and 2133. Refer your motherboard to find out the maximum memory it can hold and the maximum speed it can sustain. My Crosshair V supports a maximum of 32 GB of RAM and speeds of 1066/1333/1600/1800(O.C)/2000(O.C) and 2133(O.C)





Patriot Viper Xtreme Series (www.patriotmemory.com)


Another on my list of favorites, The Viper Xtreme Series gives rock solid performance, good over clocking capability and good heat dissipation. Available on Newegg in speeds of 1600,1866 and 2133 and 2GB and 4GB per chip.










Kingston HyperX (www.kingston.com)


HyperX has several variants, namely HyperX Genesis, HyperX Blu and HyperX T1. Kingston has long been in the memory business and makes some of the best RAMs found today. It also includes my favorite HyperX H2O (Liquid Cooled) which just looks out of this world. You can never go wrong with  Kingston!
Selling at Newegg at 2GB and 4GB chips and speeds of 1333,1600,1866,2133.




















G.SKILL Sniper & Ripjaws X (http://www.gskill.com)


Another strong contender in the market, G.Skill has a lot of products to compete for your money. Their Sniper series is a low voltage gaming set with very solid dependability. I like both the Ripjaws and the Sniper series. Selling on Newegg in 1GB,2GB,4GB and 8GB per chip and speeds of  1066, 1333, 1600, 1800, 1866, 2133, 2400, 22600 and 2666.









Mushkin Blackline & Redline (http://www.mushkin.com/Memory.aspx)



Mushkin is another company that I think you should look at if you are in the market for RAMs. Available in speeds of 1066, 1333, 1600, 1866, 2000 and 2133 and capacities of 2GB, 4GB and 8GB per chip.










The RAM I ended up choosing was the CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) 1600. All the options are in my eyes pretty much equal so it comes down basically to finding a better deal for a particular one and going with it. If possible go with one of the popular options so in case you feel like buying more RAM in the future, it is still in the market. Pay close attention to the  Memory QVL of your motherboard which can be found at their website. The QVL is short for Qualified Vendors List and it tells you of all the RAMs that have been tested on the motherboard and are certified by your motherboard maker to work on that particular motherboard. The List is updated frequently as new memory models come out. The other reason I bought the Vengeance was that it also has a Red colored one which I thought will look cool in my Computer as my mother board has black and red slots and I wanted to populate them with like colors. GPU AMD Lineup

I changed my decision about using a single post because I did not want it to get too long and possibly bore you incase you are reading my posts thoroughly. So here is part 2 of the gpu post


Creating both CPUs and GPUs, AMD has some of the best cards around to offer and they are the other major force in the world of GPUs along with NVIDIA. These two companies pretty much run neck and neck with NVIDIA generally thought to be better for maxing out performance on single monitor setups and AMD preferred for +2 monitors setup. A single AMD card is capable of running more monitors then a single NVIDIA card.

The lineup I was focused on at the time of my build was the AMD HD Radeon 6900 series. 


 Running on 1408 Stream Processors, the 6950 has native support for up to 4 simultaneous displays all of which can run with independent resolutions, refresh rates and video overlays.

A very popular card with very good ratings, the Gigabyte 6950 is a serious contender for your money if you are considering a Radeon HD 6950 card.

XFX makes some very good cards which also have the added benefit of being smaller then several of their rivals.

Dimensions : 10.2in x 4.3in

Sapphire is also another company which has some impressive cards under its belt. 



The 6970 has 1536 stream processors which lets it run games on the highest settings on multiple monitors. If you have the money, go for it!

Another solid option by XFX with some very impressive results. The card is on the longer side which is my only concern. As always keep the size in mind when choosing to fit it in a Case.

One of my favorite cards from one of my favorite companies. Also is huge!! So in checking Newegg recently, I noticed alot of the cards from the 6950 and 6970 series are gone so I am scrambling to find some links for these cards. I will update my posts if I find some more famous vendors but until then these links will have to do.

There are two more card series which I have not put in to my blog. They are the NVIDIA GTX 590 and the AMD Radeon HD 6990. Both cards are actually a dual gpu on a single card. The reason I did not is because I am having a hard time finding good links to put. Newegg is out of stock on all 6990s and does not even list the gtx 590 so you can search around for them but I will list their stock specs

Both are blazing fast, with the 590 being less noisier. 

With that out of the way the card that I chose was 



The XFX 6950. The budget I had was a strong reason for me picking this card and also that I could play nearly all the games at the highest settings and on multiple monitors as well. My final build will contain 3 monitors and at this time am not willing to purchase two cards to do either SLI or CrossFireX and with the budget constraints I have, decided that the XFX one with 2GB of Ram will be good fit for my build. Also I wanted to make an all AMD build. My next build will be an Intel NVIDIA build so please do not think I am a AMD fanboy but I still think that all companies have something unique to offer and as such should all be viable options for your build.

GPU NVIDIA Lineup

I will attempt to use a single post to detail both Nvidia and AMD video cards and then tell you which card I went with. First we will take a look at Nvidia

NVIDIA


NVIDIA is an amazing company with a very impressive portfolio of products. Known primarily for their video cards, Nvidia has also delved in to the world of mobile processors with their TEGRA lineup of Dual-Core and Quad-Core mobile processors. They offer blazing fast graphics card and are always at the cutting edge of Video Card technology.

The lineup that I was most interested in at the time of my build was the Nvidia GeForce GTX 5 Series.

GTX 560
The GTX 560 is a very good card which has 336 Cuda Cores and is capable of running games in DirectX 11 at 1080p resolution and beyond. Some good choices in the range are as follows:






1. EVGA Superclocked 02G-P3-1469-KR which has a core clock of 850Mhz, 2GB of GDDR5 Memory, Max. Resolution of 2560 x 1600 and is SLI Ready. The is 8.25 inches long which is a very important thing to note because if the card is too big for your case you might no be able to fit it easily so always always try to find out what the dimensions are. Currently selling for $209.99.

2. ASUS ENGTX560 DCII TOP/2DI/1GD5
Price : $209.99
Core Clock : 925Mhz
Memory: 1GB GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimesions : 9 in x 4.4 in (L x W)

Another very good card to have. The Ram may look smaller to you but if you plan on gaming on only one monitor you should have no problems with this card. 2GB of memory will give you more stable performance on 2 monitors.

3. MSi N560GTX-M2D1 GD5
Price : $189.99
Core Clock : 810 Mhz
Memory : 1GB GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 9.37 in x 4.41 in

Another very good card but the longest of the three I have mentioned. Space is always at a premium inside your case so always make sure your case can fit said card.

GTX 560 Ti

The 560Ti is an updated 560 with more Cuda Cores then 560. It has two editions the standard one has 384 Cores and a Limited Edition which has 448 Cores. The 560 has been one of the most popular cards NVIDIA has made which is why they came out with two more editions of it featuring more cores.

Memory : 1.25 GB of GDDR5

Dimensions : 10.5in x 4.38in

An awesome card to consider as it can keep up with and even outperform a stock GTX 570. and overclocked can perform like a GTX 580. A worthy one to consider. This is the 448 Core Limited Edition. The rest are the standard 384 Core models.

2. MSi N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OC
Price : $269.99
Core Clock : 880Mhz
Memory : 2 GB of GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 9.37 in x 4.37 in

MSi also makes some very good gpus. Their Twin Frozr line has two fans as opposed to the usual one fan which gives a better cooling option.

3. EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR
Price : $249.99
Core Clock : 850 Mhz
Memory : 1GB GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 9 in x 4.38in

So it should be apparent at this point that EVGA makes some of the best NVIDIA video cards out in the market. That is why at least one card is always mentioned in my list.

4. ASUS ENGTX560 TI DCII TOP/2DI/1GD5
Price :  $239.99
Core Clock : 900Mhz
Memory : 1GB GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 9in x 4.4 in

One of my favorite companies with one of my favorite cards. DC II stands for DirectCU II which is a dual fan design with three 8mm flatten copper heat pipes directly in contact with the GPU to provide a more cooler operation temperature and as a result, a longer lifespan.

GTX 570

Built to replace the GTX 480, The 570 is an impressive card with 480 CUDA Cores and capable of a maximum digital resolution of 2560x1600 (As per NVIDIA's reference card design.) Built to fill the niche between the 560 and 580.

As always a very solid design by EVGA, this card is a very strong contender and can play any game at max settings.

Core Clock : 742 Mhz
Memory : 1.2 GB 320-bit GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 11.5in x 5in

One of my favorite cards with the only gripe being the size of the thing. It's pretty big! As always plan accordingly.

3. MSi N570GTX Frozr III PE/OC

Price : $329.99
Core Clock : 770Mhz
Memory : 1.2GB 320-bit GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 9.57in x 4.53in

Another solid effort by MSi, The Frozr III has the higher core clock out of the three and size is also good.

GTX 580


NVIDIA's fastest DirectX 11 GPU with 512 Cuda Cores. The 580 is the very best 5 series card from NVIDIA and if you the money, you can not go wrong with it.

Price : $659.99
Core Clock : 772 Mhz
Memory : 3GB 384-bit GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 10.5in x 5.5in

The very best effort by EVGA yielded this amazing card. It is a liquid cooled card with no fans running in it and if you have the money, nothing beats it.

2. EVGA Superclocked 015-P3-1582-AR

Price : $429.99
Core Clock : 797 Mhz
Memory : 1.5GB 384-bit GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions 10.5in x 4.38in

Another very solid card by EVGA. Get this and you will be set for a long time playing any game at the highest settings.

3. Gigabyte GV-N580UD-15I

Price $389.99
Core Clock : 795Mhz
Memory : 1.5GB 384-bit GDDR5
SLI Ready
Dimensions : 11.02in x 5.39in

This card has 3 fans for some very impressive cooling! The only gripe would be of course the size as it is hitting 11 inches. Make room for it! Overall an impressive effort by Gigabyte.

There you have it folks. Those are the cards from Nvidia which I was interested in. If you are on a budget, I would recommend the GTX 560Ti. It's popularity has not waned even a bit after the Nvidia 6 series was launched (Will talk about that in a later post.) If you have the money then I would suggest the GTX580 but all in all any of these cards should keep you happy for a while!

Some decisions

Hi folks,

I am trying out different layouts for my blog currently and you might notice my blog changing a few times. I would like to apologize for any confusion this may cause you but I just wanted to try and make it a little more visually appealing. If however you guys have any comments regarding it or any good ideas, please feel free to share them with me as I would like my readers to feel comfortable reading everything I post. So if it takes too long to load or just appears over done please let me know.

Going over my blog I noticed I had left the Intel motherboard post incomplete. I have decided that in order to give full justice to everything, I will in the next couple of posts wrap up my build and then proceed on to list and note major components that are in the market now and will also be reviewing the current lines. I want to keep my blog current and if you know much about the current scene in computer components, you will know looking at my list that I am a little behind the times. I want to give justice to the time period I was creating my computer and then proceed on to all the current tech.

Today I will be posting my gpu selection and possibly my RAM selection.

AMD Motherboards

Hi Folks,

Well today I will be reviewing the AMD side of the story.

AM3


IF you went with the AM3 socket CPU's you can take a look at the AM3 motherboards.
Some good ones are as follows

ASUS M4N98TD EVO which is retailing currently for $129.99

MSi 890GXM-G65 which is retailing for $121.99

AM3+


The AM3+ is the new AMD line of processors. There are quite a few good motherboards out there that you can find and they are also very reasonably priced. The ones that I liked are as follows

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX

Retailing for $184.99, the Sabertooth boasts a large area for heat dissipation and is very good at keeping temperatures low. It has 3  PCI -E 2.0 x16 slots which will come in very handy should you decide to go the Nvidia SLI route or the AMD CrossfireX route.






ASRock 970 Extreme4

Selling for $99.99, The 970 is a very good motherboard for those who are on a smaller budget. It still gives you Three PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots and 5 SATA 6Gb/s connectors and used with care, it should give you years of satisfaction.




Now knowing that I have already bought the FX-8120, you know I was going to get a AM3+ board. Out of all the options I looked at, there was one particular board which caught my eye right of the bat and no matter what I compared it too, I just could not see myself changing my opinion.

ASUS Crosshair V Formula



The Crosshair V is from ASUS's Republic of Gamers line and as such comes with a huge host of options. It has a wide array of ROG overclocking tools and an advanced UEFI BIOS as well. The Crosshair also comes with Creative's SupremeFX X-Fi-2 built right in to the motherboard which gives you amazing sound for gaming and music. It is retailing at Newegg for $219.99.

Disappearing act

So it has been ages since I last posted. The reason is simple. Around January I unfortunately lost my job which resulted in me being unemployed and on survivor mode. It took me a while but I managed to find another job and slowly getting back up on my feet. I shall continue blogging as before but I think I will wrap up my computer post rather quickly since it has been a while and there has been a lot of new development in the component world.

What I have decided is that my next post will tell you about everything that is in my build and following that, I will explore the new Intel lineup of processors that have recently come out. Following that I will be talking about the new AMD and Nvidia lineup of gpus.

For anyone who was following my posts, I would like to apologize for my disappearance but I am back now and will be posting regularly.
